Patents to ASA (1)

Medical applications of Acetyl Salicylic acid (ASA)

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is one of the most worldwide used pharmaceutical drug to treat pain, inflammation and fever since its invention more than a hundred years ago.

ASA is an acetate ester of salicylic acid which acid is a metabolism of salicin, an active ingredient in willow bark which had already been used in the 5th century BC or earlier to relieve pain.

Although ASA and several manufacturing processes were well-known, in 1900 the American patent No. 644,077 was issued to Felix Hoffmann of Farbenfabriken vorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co for a method to synthesize ASA. The prepared ASA form was so pure and stable that it was useful as a medicinal preparation which was a better and pleasanter alternative to the standard common salicylate medicines in those days.

The Bayer company began distributing its ASA products on the market under their trademark “Aspirin” around 1898, based on research and development investments, manufacturing, marketing strategy and intellectual property management.

Today, ASA drugs are still used , even new ASA compositions and therapeutic applications of ASA are being discovered and developed in spite of its side-effects.

Besides new and inventive processes for manufacturing also new compositions, forms of administering and medical uses of known chemical of pharmaceutical products could be patentable.
